I just learned Yoshihiro Takayama suffered a spinal cord injury awhile back and is paralyzed from the neck down. Don Frye's message to him was incredible: “Takayama-san, God gave me the greatest opponent anybody could ever ask for, you. You made the greatest fight the world has ever seen. You are the reason that our fight beat the World Cup of soccer head to head on TV. You are the image of Bushido and strength and triumph. You are the first person everyone asks about when they meet me. You are the warrior we all look to be."

I'm usually against US defaultism too, but in this case they're probably comparing viewers in the countries both things aired. If the fight only showed in the US, it's fair to judge viewer numbers with other US broadcasts at the time.

The more fun fact. Yoshihiro got called up to fight on short notice (about 10 days). He wasn't in session/training. He still went and left nothing behind. Him and Frye have been good friends ever since.

Scientifically accurate, hair tightens the skin and provides a small buffer for force to spread more evenly over the surface, while I don’t think a mustache would have a super large effect, you’re not wrong

自分もリアルタイムで観てました。この試合はもう、強い！カッコイイ！凄い！とかもうそういう次元じゃなくて、これが本当の格闘技か… ここまで出来るのが真の格闘家か…と思わせてくれるような2人の試合でしたね。そりゃ究極言ってしまえば無傷で勝つのが最強の格闘家なんでしょうけど…当時まだ総合は塩試合がすんごい多かったので、尚更鮮烈なイメージを残す試合でしたね。

Had the good fortune to meet Don in real life, was just a quick handshake at the casino but he hung around there and everyone that got interact with him said he was exactly as you expect, just super chill and nice,willing to take pictures and answer a question or two.

Just an absolute all out brawl. Frye and Takayama are incredible warriors, and both genuine class acts as well. You can undoubtedly see the respect they have towards each other.

Glory and respect to Takayama! He never gave up and was a rare equal to Frye that no American fighter could match. This is the greatest fight in professional sports. Everyone else is tying for second. Wherever you are, Takayama-sama, you are still remembered and revered for standing toe to toe with the toughest American fighter. Love to Japan from America.
