i was pondering on his take on spirit>technique>strength and what he meant by spirit. it makes perfect sense. to have the spirit of a fighter means to be have supreme confidence and belief in yourself and fear nothing.. and "ultimately expressing yourself, that my friend is very hard to do" -Bruce Lee

I have special memories about Bruce. He was very intelligent and very creative, two things which I enjoy. He thought in principle. He had a high abstract intelligence. That's a thing I admire most in people. He also enjoyed physical development and fitness, two things which I like. I won art contests as a kid, and he was also a fabulous artist and enjoyed philosophy, two things on which we were both extremely hooked.

I had studied the philosophies of objectivism and J. Krisnamurti before I know about Bruce Lee. His ideas complemented and encouraged a similar ideology. He inspired me to embrace this way of thinking and integrated into my physical training. I admired his abstract thinking. These are people who think in principal. We were both artists in the sense of being able to draw and sketch. Although he was Chinese, I saw myself in him.

The fighters who have learned to punch more effectively have surpassed the mixed martial arts fighters who only have grappling skills. When the day comes that the top fighters can kick as well as punch, together with excellent grappling skills, that will be the birth of a great sport.

Bruce Lee was also starting to add more in and out type engaging drills. The old Wing Chung practitioners would penetrate their opponent’s defensive perimeter, engage with a combination but neglect to pull out or disengage at the end. Bruce was correcting this tactical oversight.

In all sports, sportsmen and athletes evolve and become better from one decade to the next. We're better coached, we're better trained, and we're healthier, we're bigger, faster, and stronger. When you become a teacher, you grow and learn much faster than you ever did as a fighter. Peter Aerts has won the K1 three different times. That only makes him a great fighter. He could perhaps become a future icon. Of course, he, as well as the rest of us, have weaknesses.

MMA is a major sport spreading all around the world and it hasn’t peaked yet. I like most of it because it finally gave the tough guy like myself a place we could call home - and without all those crybabies in other martial art disciplines complaining about someone like me hitting too hard or being too rough. The sport is still new with some kinks which may still need to be worked through - like what happens if all of a sudden a freak couple of deaths happen?

Glad to know that Machida vs Bader is getting the nod as part of the LHW picture.. so whoever has the most impressive win between the four will take the #1 LHW spot. I think out of the four, Machida, though it wasn't much was the closest to JBJ. The other three got dominated by JBJ.

I like Machida, but of the older fighters, I believe Andy Hug left the larger stamp on the world view of Martial Arts and Karate almost with the same degree of prestige as did Ramon Decker and Don Wilson, the only non-Thai ever to be voted the greatest kickboxer. There have been many outside kickboxing champions, but only one with this honor.

Together with my fighting principles and his we probably created around 30 fighting principles. For example, I could talk about the different types of speed; timing speed, intitial speed, acceleration speed, etc. Different types of mind set; focusing, aspects of focusing, target retention, etc. When I first started the Martial Arts the Orientals and the Asians could not conceptualize. I don't know if they were ignorant or thought Americans were stupid, or if they did not know any better.

Fighters today have a wealth of great instructors from which to learn. In my day, there were few coaches that knew anything about fighting or competition. Top black belts like myself basically were either self-taught or you learned, working with your sparring partner, by trial and error. Today's fighters have better technique executions in terms of their style. I feel that the older fighters were more substance-oriented. When they executed techniques, how they looked was not important.

I began my training in weightlifting and wrestling as a teenager. I have always felt grappling and weight training provides the best foundation for a fighter. I think all martial artists today should practice ground maneuvers, such as how to shoot for the legs, a couple of good rear chokes and front chokes, maybe a triangle choke, and sit-out arm bar, and a good standing arm bar. Most of that standing wrist flexing and finger locking stuff does not work in a real situation.

I had involvement in many styles. I stared Judo in 1962. I received a Black Belt in Karate in 1964. This was within a year of when I started training. I just wanted to fight. In 1967 I started working at the Main Street Gym in Los Angeles with greats like Sugar Ray Robinson. I started to get serious about boxing in 1968. However, I liked boxing but wrestling even more.

people commenting from the comfort of their couches... do not understand the ancient and time-tested life/art philosophy that Machida follows. The loss to Jones is not an end-game - one needs lose in order to win - one's journey cannot consist of wins only. Its the path of continuous improvement and ultimate focus on one's "dreams" that matters. Watch it again, write it down, follow it - you will see your life change.

Movies create heroes and myths. The combination of martial arts, which is steeped in myth and the magic of film helped create the Bruce Lee that most people imagine to be real. My image is quite different. This was a guy who was simply brilliant in his concepts, confidence and drive. I’ll take that over the movies any day. Either way we both win. Fans of Bruce have a real martial artist to champion and I have an experience that no one can take away.
