Unbeknownst to us, Severn was already neck deep in a triangle, a term and a move of which I had no knowledge at the time, and so when Dan started to hesitantly tap the ground from a standing position, I can imagine MANY people simultaneously had the same facial reaction I did, eyes bulging and mouth coming open in shock. We didn't know what just happened. We didn't know why Severn was tapping. He was standing up, bent over a downed Gracie! It made no sense. It drew people to the recorded play-back of it from word of mouth by the thousands. Even people who hated fighting wanted to see this tiny man make this giant tap out in submission without ever throwing a striking hand or foot against him in a sport that showcased a brutal, no-holds-barred (although they actually did have three rules at the time), punching, kicking, bloody slug fest. UFC fighters and especially the owners and current owners (listen up Dana White, Frank and Lorenzo Ferttita) owe Royce Gracie and his family for their success, at least in part. I don't know if they've ever shown acknowledgement and appreciation to him for it, but if they haven't they should. Gracie put some really good fighters away.
