Its all metaphor, Aztec/Mexicas proved themselves thru the "flowery wars" which we're mainly hand to hand combat. You had to fight till you pretty much "disabled" your opponent (TKO/KO) then you pretty much "took his heart" and his now your "prisoner" so Quinonez is going in with that Aztec/Mexica mentality.
