There was a reason that Silva and Chael didn’t stand next to each other at the end when they presented the entire class on stage, it’s cuz Chael couldn’t let him get close.

Old timers remember who Shogun was in his prime. Before his ACL/knee troubles. Shogun was Jon Jones before Jon Jones (which makes it pretty poetic that Jones was the one that Shogun dropped his UFC belt to). This young, 20 year old dynamo just destroying the top legends of his era. It was a little more style vs style back then compared to now where everyone is so good everywhere on average and Shogun was like one of the first guys who obviously leaned on his striking, never ending cardio too but was also just so incredibly well rounded considering his era that the rest of his “draft class” so to speak generally couldn’t keep up. He outstruck young Rampage on the feet, got the better of prime Lil Nog on the ground, then KO’d Alistair Overeem and the only man to ever draw against prime Fedor in RINGS Ricardo Arona (one of the greatest grapplers of that time) in just a single run. The Pride MW Grand Prix 2005 might still be the greatest single tournament run in the sport. One of the most legendary coming out parties I’ve ever seen in MMA. Those trademark soccer kicks and stomps would just murder people. He was the #1 LHW of that era. By the time Shogun arrived in the UFC at 76 he had already ruptured his ACL the first time and had put off surgery for it til after UFC 76. For as dominant as he was before the major injuries started to snowball he was supposed to dominate the division like that for years before he got hurt. Jones spiritually is his era’s Shogun if he never got hurt. That’s not me trying to gas Shogun up but trying to paint the picture of Shogun’s career to newer fans who don’t really know him or just for the middle of his UFC run. Despite people writing him off when the injuries cut his physical prime short he STILL managed to win the UFC belt before he hung it up. Dude is a legend and overcame injuries and skeptics WAY more than any modern or newer MMA fans will realize. Has been around in this sport at the highest level since he was almost a kid in the early/mid 2000’s. It’s a real trip now seeing him old and being at the HoF. If I had to compare Shogun to someone from another sport best way I could illustrate is to compare him to Derrick Rose if Derrick Rose had managed to win at least one ring (in the UFC at least, he obviously won a Grand Prix belt in Pride and had that sensational win streak).
@akhi57494 ай бұрын
I think Bill Walton is a good comparison. He won a title despite his foot injuries and then won a 2nd one after the injuries made him a much different player.
@RedShogun134 ай бұрын
@@akhi5749 Bill Walton’s a good comparison too but I lean more toward’s Derrick Rose with a ring because Shogun was the #1 LHW of his era. A young phenom whose future was supposed to be bright for years and years but it all got cut much shorter than it was supposed to be because of injuries. I think of Derrick Rose as the MVP destroying the league then tearing his ACL and all those struggles trying to get back to what he was after the fact. Later in his career he adjusted his play style to still make it work in the NBA. I think Rose just considering how both he and Shogun were on the top of the world in their sport/where they were at their peak, they were going to be the future, then their knees exploded and out went their prime.
This years class was truly epic. All such tremendous legendary fighters. Also, Chael quoting Razor Ramon is awesome 🔥😂
