I saw Wanderlei a few years ago at Montreal's airport. I clapped as wh passed somewhat close to me and he was very kind to walk towards me and shake my hand. We didn't speak but he smiled and seemed happy to greet a fan. Wanderlei will always be an MMA legend.

The fighters are much much better now on average….😢Chuck was extremely overrated, and I am a huge fan of his. 3 title defenses I think against fighters that would not be in the top 15 in their weight class today.

Wanderlai’s style did not translate as well to the large ufc cage. He was better fighting in a small ring that forced more brawling.

@@adrisioux8843 The back to back KO's from Cro Cop and Dan killed his confidence. He fought very timidly here (at least compared to how he fought before). I've always said that he was more concerned about not getting KO'd than he was about actually winning. But u can see that whenever he closed the distance, and let his hands go he got the better of the exchanges. Had he fought like the old Wanderlei he probably would've knocked Chuck out...Or Chuck would've knocked him out. lol. Either way there definitely would've been a finish.

I've been watching since UFC 1. I still have UFC 1-3 that I recorded on VHS. Back then it was only about $4.00 for the PPV. Times have changed.

When fighters fought because they were true fighters, now it's about how much do they make. These guys fought wars because they loved it. Even further back, the Shamrock, Gracie, Severns days. Brutal when there was no time limit. Legends are made, not paid.

this fight definitely lived up to the hype, however i wonder how much different it wouldve been if they had fought a year or two earlier than this as both had suffered pretty severe losses (KOs) leading up to this fight. i remember both in their prime, wanting to fight each other but one was the champ in pride and the other the champ in UFC. still loved this fight and still one of my favorites just from the story and build up. what an amazing era this was and thank you UFC YT for reposting this gem.

The only KO Chuck had suffered recently prior to this was Rampage. He had his 5 defenses, then lost to Rampage. He lost the split decision to Jardine just before this fight. It was after this fight where Shogun broke his jaw, Rashad broke his brain, and Franklin broke his career.

I was never a huge Chuck fan. I always preferred GSP. But damn, what a time to be an MMA fan during this period! It felt like you were a part of a secret club that only the cool kids were allowed in. These fights were always pure excitement. You knew everyone on the main card, and the fighters didn't mind actually fighting in the pocket. Damn, I miss this so much!

I fully believe gsp was great bc of his gameplan. Well I should say the goat bc of his gameplan( credit Greg Jackson) he fought a little too cautious for me. I love maniacs like Wanderlie Hendo etc. Regardless I respect him more than any other greats cause he never let his fame make a jackass( Anderson Silva Jon Jones etc)

In the early 2000s all the Chute Boxe guys from Curitiba Brazil were legendary. I (American) ended up marrying a girl from Curitiba. She went to school with Wanderlei’s daughter, and has a birthday card signed by him. 😂

UFC now is too much like High level Kickboxing... Most fighters are super polished and are technical strikers and super skilled grapplers... Back in these days when small town US high school wrestling stars older Brazilian Brawlers grew up and became theie local bar's toughest guys, got in the octagon To prove themselves.... Despite both men showing signs of wear and tear, they still gave us good looks and their fight contained elements, which are now used more often in modern MMA. Straight punch combos along the fence by Chuck, similar to Holloway. The shifting takedown, later used by Dillashaw. Impressive that Wanderlei once threw a double jab right hand, which not only backed Liddell off, but also hurt him. Silva also kicked the trailing leg of a circling along the cage Liddell.
