I MySpaced messaged Evan Tanner back in the day and he took the time to message back and forth with a 15 year old kid. That's the kind of guy Evan Tanner was, he was drinking heavily at the time and really on a downward trajectory based on his posts on myspace, these messages took place during the hiatus from fighting between the Justin Levins win and the Yushin Okami loss. I basically was like hey come back and fight you're a champion I believe in you and he was all esoteric and nihilistic as to why it was all too late for things to be as they once were. But he took the time and was very kind and down to earth. Love you Evan. God Bless!

@@blackmetalcumbia He basically was saying how fighting served no purpose and that he really didn't like it, his relationship was going bad with his then wife I think he was going through a divorce and he just rejected any sort of positive affirmations and reinforcement he was in the midst of a drunken depression he spoke about drinking heavily, had a huge beard and just let himself go. He started talking about the power of one and changing the world and just life stuff.

I met him at a sport fight in Oregon when I was just a kid. He offered me a free membership to his gym. Amazing guy, really sad to see him gone.

Maybe I’m bias but to me this was the best era of MMA. When it was gym vs gym, specialist vs specialist. You had guys like Evan who taught themselves and were actually able to compete and do well...You had the UFC octagon with XYience all over it, and every UFC fighter had their own sponsorships on their fight gear (good Ol condom depo LOL). @@Jessica-to8um wow, thank you so much for that documentary I just watched the whole thing. I was a big Evan Tanner fan I'd like the guy. And I kind of was leaning towards that he was that he committed suicide before watching that documentary because he was so sensitive and kind of awkward strange individual someone like me. I guess the UFC is doing a big documentary on him right now or has just put one out I haven't seen that one either but I think you have to be a member pay it for a membership of the UFC

When Evan made his debut at UFC 18 and his return at UFC 19, he was an absolute BEAST!!! I instantly became a big fan and followed his career closely. It is so damn heartbreaking that he ran out of water in that harsh environment and passed away. He was just a good soul. Bas Rutten claims that Evan Tanner was the only fighter that could out drink him lol. RIP Champ!!!!!😥

My favorite fighter. I watched the UFC from the beginning. And I was always an Evan Tanner fan. I just thought he was a down to earth dude, that lived in the state below me. And that he was a northwest boy. Rest easy man

Luckily, I actually had the honor of watching Evan’s last performance in the octagon where he fought Okami at UFC 82 in Columbus. I met Evan after the fight and he could not have been a more gentle person.

Evan was one my favorite fighters. I met him in the gift shop at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall. UFC THE WAR of 04 when he submitted Robbie Lawler with a triangle choke. Such a nice guy. That event was awesome, I literally met every fighter on the card.

Tanner & I are kindred spirits. I also learned Jiu jitsu from watching it and rolling with everyone i can, i'm a serious challenge to anyone who isn't a high level black belt. There was a time when Evan was my favorite fighter, he was such a stud. I hope he found what he was looking for but all us old school mma fans sure miss him and wonder what if.

I know the comment is a year old but there are tons of tough fighters now just like they were. Guys like Elkins, Gaethje, and Korean Zombie leave it all in there every time while also being more technically skilled because they learned from the losses guys like Tanner and Griffin had.

I had the pleasure of meeting him at either the first or second UFC PPV I went to in Las Vegas. He was just randomly hanging out in the MGM Grand between fights and people were coming right up to shake his hand and take selfies. I was a bit awestruck but a friend pushed me in his direction and he was nothing but cordial and kind. Awesome man and I was so heartbroken when I heard he had died. :(

Damn, just watched a Bas Rutten vid and learned about this man. I think i can understand him, that feeling that you have no place you could ever call home. I guess thats why he read books so much as i did with playing videogames, its just this world seems "different" like we re aliens not belonging here. Actually i thought about the same stuff as him, just going deep into a forest and try to survive there or get defeated by it , instead of a desert. But then i somehow learned within myself that i cannot find what i look for on the outside. There is nothing for me to be found that helps my soul settle in this world. So my workaround is just i accept it and try to make the lives of the ppl around me as good as possible. R.I.P Evan Tanner.

A very interesting wonderful man, very deep, intellectual, quiet shy man until he got into the ring, just the sort of Man, who would be a pleasure to get to know, to be able to call him a friend would be an honour. It doesn't mention it here but according to Chael Sonnen he was a depressed alcoholic that would get drunk at nights yet train harder than anyone. The fact that he achieved so much in spite of his demons shows what a truly courageous person he was.
