During ceremonies and social gatherings, the plisi represented the wearer’s honor and standing, reinforcing its significance as a cultural and moral symbol. An exception to these strict gender norms was the burrnesha (sworn virgins), women who took an oath of celibacy and assumed the social roles, rights, and responsibilities of men. By adopting male attire, often including the plisi, burrneshat were integrated into male-dominated spaces and treated with the respect accorded to men. For them, the plisi symbolized not only their social transformation but also their commitment to uphold the values and responsibilities associated with the male role, reflecting the plisi’s broader cultural and symbolic flexibility. The plisi is also closely linked to levendëria, where masculinity is defined by self-restraint, nobility, and respect for others, including the weaker or even one’s enemies. It represents not only physical and social status but also moral and spiritual control, embodying the values of dignity and justice. Overall, the plisi remains a multifaceted symbol of Albanian identity, reflecting the country’s historical heritage, cultural depth, and moral values. It represents honor, dignity, spiritual harmony, and national belonging, standing as a unique and enduring element of Albanian tradition through the centuries.
