I think Issy has conditioned himself to not know how to deal with getting hit, as he's so phenomenal at avoiding damage, it's really worked to his disadvantage with a guy who accurate goes relentlessly for the head and lands at a nearly 50% rate.

If a fighter lands strikes, that will still contribute to the total number of strikes landed, regardless of whether they're blocked or not. That's the exact reason why striking accuracy and significance also exist. To differ from strikes that are blocked/checked.

The weirdest thing to me, as someone who hadn’t watched this fight till now, is that none of them talked about Strickland’s front kicks with either leg and how he was using them as body jabs. Lots of counters to Adesanya’s hand-fighting and straights, lots of arresting teeps - and also lots of knee feints to play off of Adesanya’s anticipation of a front kick. Half his jab work was being done by those straight kicks, but DC said Strickland should jab more? Wild. Also, I do like Adesanya’s style usually, but he was really not getting much sustained offence. At most I would give him round 2. The rest of the time he was too lost inside his own head, with brief flashes of success that feel like they encouraged complacency for much of rounds 3 & 4. The backfist / flicker jab offered a good angle for jabbing back at Strickland, as a replacement for handfighting, but he barely used it. We didn’t see Adesanya throw meaningful kicks over the lead shoulder until he winged one so hard that Strickland could back up with time to spare - and I can’t tell for sure on the frames but it looked like the attempted head kick was too high to land anyway. Ultimately, good technical fight, nice knockdown, not as crazy as I’d thought it would be. If I scored it, there’d be 4 rounds Strickland, with 10-8 to him in round 1, but round 3 was reasonably close.
