The game changer was the rule changes for more action, taking the fight off the ground. Also the taping of hands, wrists and those gloves made striking by hand much more effective.

I agree with his technique just because EVERY fighter knew that's all he had was that right hand, and his technique wasn't the best. But, it worked for him and became a champ. He wasn't afraid to take a punch and invited those to come swing at him in hopes he catches you just one time.

The "amateur spirit" of the old UFC has its "charm", seeing fighters who are obviously overweight face others with previous preparation (and even experience in martial arts competitions) seems something out of a video game; But certainly in the 90s it was a much wilder competition.
