No one has ever faced a challange like Royce in modern combat arts. He fought guys twice his size with fists big as barn doors. He fought roided shootfighters. He fought everyone when there was almost no fame or fortune in the sport. And he fought them all in ONE NIGHT.

Royce himself failed a drug test for steroids after the second Kazushi Sakaraba fight.I think Sakuraba whooping his ass for 90 minutes the first time made him turn to roids.
@theDavidChannel111 жыл бұрын
***** gained 30 lbs? Royce has always fought at about 180. If you're suggesting he fought Sakuraba at 210 lbs you're trippin'. And even if he did use a banned substance (which he denies), it wasn't to 'bulk up'. That substance (Nandrolone) is used for quick recovery and to fight fatigue.
@Shinobi334 жыл бұрын
Yea he also fought in an oversized gi against guys who wanted strike first and shoot That gi definitely helped him. Or else jujitsu practitioners would still be allowed to wear them.

Many people say he was overrated. Most of his opponents thought the same thing and lost. You can see the fear in many of his opponents faces when they know they are about to fall to the ground. Many fighters knew the best thing strategy was to not fall down and try to grapple with him. But once they were both on the ground the other fighter knew he was screwed if he can't stand back up. After awhile other fighters knew they should learn some BJJ.

This guy is amazing. What he did in that night is exceptional. I believe that most fighters today are not even capable of doing that... fighting and winning in the same night against multiple opponents that were basically two, three times bigger than him and went out there to bust your face in. He was putting technique and fight IQ over power and muscle.

Nothing but respect and i've been a Fan since 93 BUT, Every question Royce get's asked, he's answered a hundred time's before. I'd like to see him be himself. He never let's his guard down and say's the same answer for every question, so every interview is the same. It's a Gracie thing, there ALL like that. They have there version of the history of Gracie Jui-jitsu and they all stick to the same answer's. In reality Royce is actually very Child like in nature but has an instant focus that all the Gracie's seem to have. It's that trained killer look 😑.

cool interview overall, but especially the Mike Tyson reference .. I must say, that personally, I still can't get over how stupid too many are towards the timeless and countlessly proven fact that the grappling arts are far superior to striking! Royce Gracie you are a wonderful legend!!
@thedarkknight64610 жыл бұрын
Considering that tyson was very well capable of of enough power to throw a single knock out punch I'd say it would have been a 50-50 chance. Like royce said at one point he's isn't punch proof. You have to close the distance to grapple so he could either rush into him at the very beginning and risk getting knocked out if he can't immediately take him down (bad idea) or try and survive standing up for a while and tire him out so the takedown will be easier but something tells me royce would have gone for the takedown from the beginning so it's 50-50 from unbiased viewpoint considering the individual fighters not just their "styles"
@1974spr9 жыл бұрын
retro1n2screwdarest Only in refereed sport fighting. If someone I'm fighting tried to lay down with me on top of them I'd pick them up and slam them down on the curb, concrete or asphalt. Wherever we're fighting I'll find something to drop their head on. What's to stop me from shoving a thumb in your eye socket and leaning on it with all my weight? Specify what you mean. Also an experienced striker can hit from angles as well. So getting the takedown is not as easy. I'm not saying it's not effective in the ring. It's just not FAR superior. Depends on the practitioners in the fight.
@profd659 жыл бұрын
+BorneoScout Grappling is totally superior to striking. If the UFC didn't have judging, refereeing, and rules that totally favor strikers, the strikers would virtually never win. Plus, the UFC forces the fighters to use gloves, which (1) protect the hands of the strikers, and (2) make it difficult for grapplers to choke anybody.
@BieberSucksCock1009 жыл бұрын
+profd65 If the UFC didn't have judging and refereeing then grapplers would get their limbs bit off...
@profd659 жыл бұрын
BieberSucksCock100 Oh, really. And why do assume grapplers can't also bite? On the ground, the grappler is going to have the dominant position and be much better able to bite, poke eyes, etc., than his opponent.

I do think that he was behind Bruce Lee as a person who represented a philosophy that will for ever change the way we think of being a complete fighter. You can like or dislike the ground range but clearly the gracie family was right behind Bruce Lee with having an unusual out the box thinking when it comes to combat. That out the box thinking will for ever change the world of combat.
