That was the UFC's intention -- re-sign with us and we'll set up some good fights; leave the UFC and you're final fight is Khamzat. Ariel Helwani even speculated that the UFC booked a weak PPV fight card, expecting it to sell poorly. After leaking the low PPV buys, they'd claim that Nate Diaz is irrelevant and hurt Nate's post-UFC earning potential.

I really do believe if nate resigned to the ufc before his contract was over then he would’ve got any fight he asked for (outside of a title fight and even then there’s always a chance at that just because his name value). But if he resigned I believe we would be seeing Diaz fight Poirier or Ferguson right now. Since he didn’t want to play ball they’re throwing a new killer at him

The UFC Welterweight division is so unique that it has some of the biggest rivalries within it (notably Edwards v Usman, Masividal v Covington, Nate Diaz v Everybody) yet it has some of the most well respected fighters in all of UFC. Stephen Thompson, Li Jingliang and now retired Cowboy Cerrone are seemingly well regarded by everyone.
