That Maurice vs Coleman fight is still one of the great lessons about how crazy mma can be to predict. I'll never forget that fight and that era of mma it was amazing and almost out of business at the same time.

Maurice Smith was always underrated in my opinion. Wasn't easy for a kickboxer to start in MMA, let alone in Pancrase against great grapplers like Minoru Suzuki, Masakatsu Funaki and Ken Shamrock. But he went to the Lion's Den to train with Ken and Frank in shootfighting and taught Ken and Frank a lot about improving their striking. He was a POWERFUL addition and when I see Ken's striking, I can see the influence. He was a great striker in a time when UFC was all about grapplers, a good man amongst transh-talkers and he didn't need to pull any damn race card or talk about being black to do it, he just did his thing and came out on top. Awesome dude. Glad to see him finally rise.

I would add that back then people were considered finished in their boxing career once they hit their 30s. He defiantly broke the mold in that regard and made people reconsider age while fighting. The video make's it seem like he just did Kickboxing he had some experience in grappling he used guard to tire Coleman out. That's the whole point of guard trap your opponent and relax while they gas out and go to work and that's what he did but Kickboxing alone will lose against a world class wrestler every time. If Smith never put Coleman in guard he would of lost
