I agree. It was like something out of blood sport. Unique style vs. unique style. It's kind of lost it's allure in a way. For instance if you have 2 brazilian jiu jitsu world champions fight - the fight can often just turn into a D level kickboxing match because neither wants to be on the ground with the other (same with 2 wrestlers who can't take each other down). Or you have 2 fighters with essentially all the same jack of all trade talents and nothing stands out.

I watched this live.... and for those who don't know the full story, Gracie got Kimo to submit, but that submission came at a price, with exhaustion and dehydration forcing Gracie to withdraw from the field just moments ahead of a semifinal bout with Harold Howard. When the announcement came that Gracie couldn't continue, Kimo ran to the octagon and celebrated as if he hadn't just surrendered his match minutes beforehand. It was a wild night.

I agree. Most of the Gracie family members are "still dangerous". It's just that MMA has evolved dramatically since the mid-1990s. The Gracies might not be able to beat "top-ranked MMA fighters", but that doesn't mean that they're anything to be taken lightly. In fact, many of the Gracies "train" the baddest MMA fighters on the planet, which makes these competitors as formidable as they are. Rener and Ryron Gracie "tap out" SWAT team members and Special Forces soldiers. The majority of guys who "think they're tough" wouldn't stand a chance against an unarmed SWAT officer or elite soldier, much less a typical Gracie family member.

Royce was so revolutionary. He just showed that taking a fight to the floor is the most effective way of winning it. And that's how MMA has been ever since 👍 The first few UFCs were funny because you'd have guys trying to have stand up fights, and having no idea how to handle Royce constantly trying to take them down to the mat!

He wouldn't exactly be the same without roids, they are helping his strength, but he would still give royce a tough fight without them for sure. You don't even know he's on roids either. Go to a very very serious gym, and you'll see several guys not on roids bigger and stronger than Kimo here. He likely was on roids though, I can't say I would trust Kimo to make everything fair, but at the same time Royce is pulling hair, which is legal, but just the cheapest most BS move there is. I remember watching this for the first time. In the 90's, the word jiujitsu was akin to various Aikido and Aiki jiujitsu styles that were standing in nature. And then there was Judo. No one had ever heard of Brazilian/Gracie jiujitsu and no one ever thought that Royce would win with his *Gracie Jiujitsu*. After all he wasnt a Karate or kung fu blackbelt. And that was the thing back then. It was a shock to me and everyone around me. This permanently changed accepted paradigms in human combat.
@joshuahudgins
@joshuahudgins 8 жыл бұрын
I had heard of many forms of jui jitsu even brazilian in the late 80s. It was not as uncommon as you think. Emperors jiu jitsu had ground fighting and ground submissions so did nin jitsu. BJJ Just focuses on it as the overall goal while limiting the kicking part of it.
@vaughanmacegan4012
@vaughanmacegan4012 8 жыл бұрын
This jui-jitsu which is the bastardized spelling of word "Jujutsu" (look at the meaning of the Japanese words) is Judo. In fact it is just the newaza component of Judo without any of the tachi-waza components. Judo newaza and Brazillian newaza are the same thing, using the same techniques the only thing that's different are the rules. In fact for me it's almost impossible to tell where traditional (Kosen) Judo ends and brazillian newaza starts. I do a jujutsu style that has a heavy nage waza focus and also newaza elements you know the armbars, leglocks, strangles and other osaekomi elements so I don't understand why you think this changed accepted paradigms in human combat especially when you consider the Gracies where beaten by a Japanese wrestler, granted one trained in judo techniques, but, still a wrestler.
@vaughanmacegan4012
@vaughanmacegan4012 8 жыл бұрын
I don't remember ever mentioning modern Judo - but seeing that you have - all that Judo has to to is change one rule to allow newaza to be primary form of attack and submission ala Kosen Judo allowed back in - reverse the stance or outlawed techniques to stop newaza (which are still taught in Judo classes that I've been involved in) and tada you have Japanese newaza that the same as Brazillian newaza using the same techniques with different names.

@Living Dead Guy Yes, no rules, no weight classes. It's a bitch move to pit someone who's 240 LBS against someone who's 170 LBS. If there's no rules, anything goes. If you want "bitch moves banned," you should watch something that has more rules in it.
@1Insurgency1
@1Insurgency1 3 жыл бұрын
@Living Dead Guy Bro idk why you keep plugging up my KZbin feed, my point was is that you seem to be criticising "a bitch move" in a "bitch game." As I said it's a bitch move to pit someone who's like 30 kg heavier than you against you. That's a bitch move. You have so much more mass and leverage that it's not really fair.
