I agree. It was like something out of blood sport. Unique style vs. unique style. It's kind of lost it's allure in a way. For instance if you have 2 brazilian jiu jitsu world champions fight - the fight can often just turn into a D level kickboxing match because neither wants to be on the ground with the other (same with 2 wrestlers who can't take each other down). Or you have 2 fighters with essentially all the same jack of all trade talents and nothing stands out.

I watched this live.... and for those who don't know the full story, Gracie got Kimo to submit, but that submission came at a price, with exhaustion and dehydration forcing Gracie to withdraw from the field just moments ahead of a semifinal bout with Harold Howard. When the announcement came that Gracie couldn't continue, Kimo ran to the octagon and celebrated as if he hadn't just surrendered his match minutes beforehand. It was a wild night.

@Fluke I actually think he was over hyped and he wasn't pure jiujitsu like they claim. According to some of the announcers and other employees, the gracies rigged the ring. By that I mean tried to pick and choose who they fought, to boost their agenda.
@Scorch1028
@Scorch1028 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Most of the Gracie family members are "still dangerous". It's just that MMA has evolved dramatically since the mid-1990s. The Gracies might not be able to beat "top-ranked MMA fighters", but that doesn't mean that they're anything to be taken lightly. In fact, many of the Gracies "train" the baddest MMA fighters on the planet, which makes these competitors as formidable as they are. Rener and Ryron Gracie "tap out" SWAT team members and Special Forces soldiers. The majority of guys who "think they're tough" wouldn't stand a chance against an unarmed SWAT officer or elite soldier, much less a typical Gracie family member.

@@gamerepic4760 It's the opposite, fighting ain't supposed to have any rules. The UFC is combat sports, not actual, real, fighting. Royce was so revolutionary. He just showed that taking a fight to the floor is the most effective way of winning it. And that's how MMA has been ever since 👍 The first few UFCs were funny because you'd have guys trying to have stand up fights, and having no idea how to handle Royce constantly trying to take them down to the mat!

Roids don't give you this ability at all, no ability to fight. Some of you people just know nothing about athletics and roids. He wouldn't exactly be the same without roids, they are helping his strength, but he would still give royce a tough fight without them for sure. You don't even know he's on roids either. Go to a very very serious gym, and you'll see several guys not on roids bigger and stronger than Kimo here. He likely was on roids though, I can't say I would trust Kimo to make everything fair, but at the same time Royce is pulling hair, which is legal, but just the cheapest most BS move there is. I just wouldn't complain about this fight, that's all i'm saying.
@jondoe6273
@jondoe6273 10 жыл бұрын
I remember that fight, Royce had a low blood sugar problem and hadn't eaten in awhile which is bad news for that condition, could cause death. At the least just saps all your energy. It was also found afterwards that Kimo greased himself up for the fight. No one checked the fighters then and they didn't have any rule against it anyway, so little was made of it, but that was the reason Royce had such a hard time getting him down and holding on to him. Thats why he used the hair which he later said it wasn't much easier that way cause his hair was full of the same greasy substance. Oh the old days. The talent of the guys today are light years better than that time, but nothing will ever compare to the newness and complete rawness of the begining. Today you pretty much know what you're getting. An extremely high level of athletic ability and martial art talent. Fights now are usually long because of how highly and equally talented the top fighters are. And mostly its anyones fight. And if you're a fan, you're pretty familiar with all the ways the fight could be won. The only unknown is who will win and which of those ways will they use. Back then, the whole damn thing was an unknown. That will never happen again. Literal style against style. Real blatant differences. Hell most of the fighters had never even tested what they knew like this. I love MMA now, but if you missed out on those days, you missed the most unique time in martial arts history and sports history in general. And nothing now can compare to what those guys then risked for little to no money at all and little status. Even any status gain was limited, short lived and easily turned into negative status. Back then they truely did it simply because they wanted to. And mostly the only reward was knowing you did it. These days it misses the rawness, the purity of how humans will go to extreme lengths to achieve something that promises not a monetary reward, but something else. Something that's the same as everyone else, but also distinctly different to each individual making possible only to be them to fully understand the why. Yea, that's pure, that's raw and its rare and it was present for a short time ine the very early days. Oh well, it was cool while it lasted. Hey, there's always Curling. I mean no one could possibly be doing that for financial gain, or status. Well then Curling it is! See ya'll on the ice. Olympics, here I come!!!

SlayerofFiction That was years later. He didn't do them during those first 5 UFC's. Hell he didn't need to then. Those first 5, non of the other fighters understood his BJJ yet. He left MMA after number 5 for a long time to get back surgery. By the time he came back, everybody was well versed in BJJ and then some. The level of talent had improved so much in such relatively short time, it was a different ballgame for him now. Not to mention hoe physically strong the competition was as well and so many of them on roids. He must of felt it was the only way he could come back. And to his credit, still took a few fights way out of his weight class. But even the roids couldn't return him to the superman he appeared to be before. The cat was out of the bag, BJJ wa unleashed to the world as well as other usable arts and all were and still are improving almost on a daily basis. But no one can ever take away from what he did in those first 5 UFC's. There has always been a fighter that seems unbeatable for a period of time. Like Anderson Silva, Fedor, GSP etc and these days Jones. Royce was the first one to have that role and will always own that spot.

@Living Dead Guy Yes, no rules, no weight classes. It's a bitch move to pit someone who's 240 LBS against someone who's 170 LBS. If there's no rules, anything goes. If you want "bitch moves banned," you should watch something that has more rules in it.

@Living Dead Guy Bro idk why you keep plugging up my KZbin feed, my point was is that you seem to be criticising "a bitch move" in a "bitch game." As I said it's a bitch move to pit someone who's like 30 kg heavier than you against you. That's a bitch move. You have so much more mass and leverage that it's not really fair.

I remember a conversation with a work mate who asked me who I thought the best UFC fighter was. I told him Royce Gracie. My pal was shocked even a little disgusted and asked WHY? Simple I said because they had to change the rules to stop him winning. Those 30 minute fights with only one rule (no eye gouging) were the closest thing to mortal combat a true test of what would happen in a fight for your life. It would be really interesting to see which of today's top fighter would win in a no rules no time limit fight. Would BJJ still be a fight winner. Guess we will never know now that UFC comes with all the hype and BS of Pro wrestling. Dana White may have built a successful business model but he killed the purest form of fighting sports.

I watch ufc since the first one, and the rules were made for the spectacle and safety of them. That's part of the business. The referee John Mccarthy came with some rules, cause he coulndt even stop the fight! He had to ask the team to throw the towel. It was completely minblowing to watch but Someone would get killed live and the sport would be banned forever. Also some of those 30 min fights were boring as hell.
