Crazy to think there were people who went to ufc events and didn’t know what was going on. The commentator saying “what is a guard?” says how far the sport has gotten

I remember UFC 1 and the crowd booing because they didn't understand why combatants were tapping out. I was involved in martial arts in the 80s - Karate Wado Ryu, Kung Fu Pai Lum and kick boxing - and there was endless debates about which was the best. The UFC opened everyone's eyes. As Jim Brown the Co-commentator remarked - fighting is not what we thought it was!

You gotta think this was pre MMA. Most fighters had one style and except for Gracie it wasnt BJJ. It was Karate or Boxing/Kickboxing and a lot of wrestlers. You’re correct though that commentator shouldn’t have been calling these fights. Then again Jim Brown wasn’t exactly a fight expert either lol

Royce's entrance in the first one was brilliant. Walked out in a Gi tfat was so new you could still see the creases from the package. He stood awkwardly and in no way looked like he was a threat. The only guy not fooled was Bill 'superfoot' Wallace. He tells his co-host, he tells Jim Brown. Royce strangely posted up threw a weird punch or two, maybe a basic front kick. His opponents saw that snd moved on him. Then they lost

It really was a unique and special time in the early years. I know so much has been reshaped and the format drastically changed since then but it got me thinking could there still not be some cup like one night competitions once in a while also? Could never happened, even if they wanted it to. Back then, the best fighters would roll their opponents in 30-60 seconds, relatively unblemished. Today, there is not such a gap, so the fighters would have to fight 3 legitimate fights of 15 minutes. The Jennum victory really exposed the problem with the tournament format.
