Don Frye was probably the first true mixed martial artist or close to it. Division 1 wrestling, pro boxing experience, a black belt in judo and a crazy amount of heart.

I just met Don Frye at international fight week this year. Had a small conversation with him, seemed like a cool, genuine guy. When he shook my hand it was like a bears paw and firm as hell. It took me by surprise. I was like "Holy shit" in my head, lol.

only problem is , it hasnt evolved its devolved... The fighters have incorporated more disciplines into their repertoire (thats true) YET the sport as a whole has devolved... from fluid rules (hardly any) to rules which promote lay and praying (because they cant headbutt, pull hair, hit testicles etc etc etc to finish the guy ) .. or rules which allow runners to not engage in the fight ... and still win ( see Izzy )... Rankings having no value or weight , random kids getting pushed because they sell tickets. Putting feral looking blondes on the commentary booth because 'selling views' The list goes on and on Thats not evolution. UFC is a joke nowadays.

It's crazy how fast time flys bye. I still remember UFC 1-10, the 33 and 33.5 (odd number) , all the pride fighters and the chuck/Tito/randy drama... even Gracie winning the 1st one ... It's really amazing how it's evolved. Shamrock and his leg locks were lethal. Today a 2year many would know how to roll with one... Just amazing looking back at the improvements. I still remember Randy winning the HW and LHW titles. It was unheard of someone winning 2 weight classes back then. Man the steroids would have been a staple diet back then too! Especially in pride.

They were all the class of wrestlers that completely cleaned out all the other disciplines & combat sport styles until it was only the wrestlers left! This was the reason The Gracie’s purposely didn’t allow any pure/high level wrestlers to enter the early UFC’s.. it’s amazing watching these competitors and I’m forever thankful for what they built & trailblazed giving us now the greatest combat sport in the world!

@@Leo-1t1tpbecause it’s not comparable at all.... Don’t get me wrong, I love Don Fry. But when he did this, the skill level of the fighters involved varied widely. Most weren’t “pro” fighters that spent every day training like the fighters do today. It was an entirely different ‘sport’ back then Also, it was much easier to get a win by exploiting your opponents lack of understanding of some aspect of MMA. Back then, most guys had a single discipline that they trained in, and barely knew anything else. Today, all the fighters are well rounded and competent in all areas generally So it’s not a reasonable comparison. Now say if GSP or Usman could go in a time machine & go back to fight during these years, yes they could do the same thing Royce and Don did
