Sean won the 1st, 2nd, 5th round. He was the champion. Plus he won on paper with way more strikes and sig strikes landed. Most importantly, he won the 6th round as I would call it. Look at ddp face compared to seans in post fight. Sean did more on paper and off paper. Very close fight. Should have given it to sean

It depends of the execution imo just like they evaluate striking, it's easy to distinguish significant strikes... but takedowns and grappling in general is something more complex. Still, a couple of basic ass takedowns who are defended immediately, they shouldn't decide fights

Damage wins .. DDP won 2nd, 3th and 4th. I dont remember 5th well enough to tell that one. That is just downside of Stricklands style .. he can throw more strikes but 80% of them are light so that if opponent put few more significant strikes he is gonna lose on scoring.

Don’t know how they gave it to DDP. He dominated in the 4th when Sean got cut but that’s about it. Sean started strong and finished strong, definitely took round 1, 2 and 5. He’s also the only champ in the UFC that Dana doesn’t follow on Instagram and all the sponsors don’t like Sean, probably a bit of politics come into play since he called out the Canadian PM in the pre fight presser

As a South African, I have to agree. Take nothing away from the fight, it was a great fight, but after the 5th round I was 100% sure that Strickland would get the votes. THat being said, Strickland in no way dominated the fight. He dominated the first round, definitely, but as a whole it was a close fight and definitely lived up to the pre match hype.

There’s so many title fights are were 50/50 in the past and the champion kept the belt so this one just doesn’t make sense. I know the sponsors don’t like Sean and DDP will be a great champion for their expansion into Africa but winning the belt this way just rubs me up the wrong way. Izzy is already calling him out on social media and Dana will give that fight to him, but no one wants to see it. Izzy’s last few fights have been very underwhelming

Taking nothing away from Dricus, but the decision did feel very off. 10/9 times a match like this will go to the defending champion, especially considering that he was fighting on home turf. It are what it am I guess. South Africa is one of the corrupt capitals of the world so I guess the UFC couldn't pass up the chance to coin the shit out of it.

In UFC history, if the challenger had a close fight by ANY means, the judges did not hand them the title...It's just reality. If you don't clearly dominate the champion, or tap him out or leave him laying on the canvas, you're not going to get the belt. To be the champ you gotta beat the champ. This is one of the few times in UFC history that this isn’t true.

@@discogypsyfish9577 It’s a rare event. It’s def not the only time a challenger has won by SD but most of those weren’t such a clear robbery on paper. A 70+ significant strike difference on paper is kinda crazy. If takedowns count for THAT much even when u do absolutely nothing with them and the guy gets straight back up to his feet then we need reevaluate the scoring system. What I find odd is that Superstar champions don’t lose those championship fight split decisions unless they were clearly defeated. It only happens when it’s a guy who doesn’t draw/sell tickets or a controversial fighter like Sean. Example of a few of the Fighters who lost a close SD for the belt when they were champ: Moreno, Demetrius Johnson, Dillashaw (during his 1st run vs Cruz) all notorious for not being big ticket sellers during their time. Dillashaw didn’t start selling til after the 1st Garbrandt fight.

I don't have a huge problem if they do DDP vs Izzy, but I do have one issue. Izzy lost to Alex and got the rematch. Izzy lost to Sean. I kind of want Izzy to fight someone before he gets the title shot again. At the same the 185 division is kind of weak. Maybe, do Izzy vs Khamzat for next shot at DDP. Looking at DDP face I don't know if UFC 300 is on the table.

BLATANT ROBBERY! The primary judging criteria is damage (sig strikes). Takedowns are futile if they are not used to facilitate damage (sig strikes). Strickland threw way more strikes than duplessis in total and per round. Also landed way more total and sig strikes per round, specially head sig strikes (the most sig of them all).

Although it was a well-balanced fight, what determined DuPlessis' victory was business. I don't speak without proof: Firstly, there is an understanding that very balanced title fights should always be directed towards the champion. Second, for every very balanced title fight, but which the challenger actually won, the champion who just lost was given an immediate rematch. Thus, despite being very balanced, the fight was still won by a small margin by Strickland. In the worst case scenario for him, he should have at least left this fight with a rematch already scheduled.

Only problem is the first understanding comes from a saying Ric Flair coined, "To be the man you gotta beat the man", and Ric Flair's a professional wrestler not a fighter, so are we really holding WWE standards for UFC fights? I also think Sean should have won for the record, but not because of that old saying, mostly because he outstruck DDP in 4/5 rounds and those takedowns amounted to 2 minutes of control out of a 25 minute fight

The flaw of this fight was the takedowns, how the judges in UFC categorize/score them... a couple of badly executed takedowns who were immediately guarded, barely a couple of minutes of control, they shouldn't count more than significant strikes, hell no. The UFC needs to revise how they score these fights (and I am a big fan of Khabib, but like I said, there are levels of execution for takedowns and control, if Khabib is at the highest level, Du Plessis is at the lowest)
