I remember watching this with my dad when I was a kid. All we had was WWF/WCW type stuff. Dad said (skeptically) “I’ll tell you if this is real or not.” After that kick to the face my dad stated as-a-matter -of-factly “Yeah, it’s real.”

"those rules" this kind of fight was never "normal". But only because of the weight class interaction. And the heavier weight class lost. The actual fight played out like perfectly normal just without gloves, even though it was a kick that did him in. White dude was just on another plane of existence with his speed

@@Eusantdac I used to think that. Rewatched them recently with an old friend & it really wasn't better imo. Times might have been & had some better characters but not the fights. Hair pulling. Low blows (sometimes over and over and over and over in the same fight lol). People dropping out & having someone fresh come fight them for the title. & It started to change at a point where sumo, boxer, kickboxer v doesn't matter - whoever is better at Brazilian judo wins 99% of the time. I'm glad we had it, and it was fun as hell getting new tapes. Friend had a brother who trained with a semi pro in the area at the time & they'd get all kinds of stuff. Dude fought the chief Andre (think that was his name) Roberts of all people lol. Didn't win but didn't do bad either. Unlocked memory. Did the same with rewatching pride. THAT had better fights & stands the test of time I think.

All praise to that ref. Everyone was against him in stopping that fight, including his employers, the crowd and the fighters, but he did so because it was clearly the right thing to do.
@no_nameyouknow
@no_nameyouknow Жыл бұрын
The ref didn't stop the fight. He paused it in the middle of the action. If had actually stopped the fight I would be fine, but he didn't. He paused the action, giving the sumo a chance to recover. Then the doctor stopped the fight. In hindsight, it looks like the ref was right because the fight was stopped eventually without restarting the action. But there is a reason Gerard was confused when the ref put a TIME OUT sign up. Time out means that you are going to time back in at some point, and the time out occurred right when Gerard was about to win the fight.

Unless you've got the size, strength, and speed, to put behind your techniques; they're useless. A good example of such is when some 180lb or so, guy thinking he was a badass, and able to beat anyone because he was a black belt in karate. Failing to acknowledge that it's a defensive way of fighting rather than an offensive one. He made the mistake of taking me on when I was 275lbs and in powerlifting in highschool, and I proceeded to throw him around the room like a ragdoll until he couldn't stand up and I left the room afterwards. He never tried starting a fight with myself or my friends again after that while we were in school. It's always a bad idea to take on a larger and more physically powerful opponent. Even if you've got some type of training. Although if they are at least fast enough, they do have at least a chance of winning.

If Teila Tuli looks familiar, it's because he is an actor on the show, Hawaii Five-0. He now uses the name Taylor Wily. He has definitely put on some serious weight since his UFC days. I imagine this fight incentivized him to seek a career in hollywood, where he wouldn't have to be kicked in the face. Kudos to Mr. Tuli on his successful career transition.

Most of us "Generation X" were still fascinated of films like Van Damme LionHeart so it was no brainer that people will want to see a recreation of brutal fights like the movie but live. I remember how everyone talked about it next day and seemed surreal at the time.

I kinda wish Dana would do events like this once in a while though where there's no rules at all. Someone like Colby could fight out if his weight class and someone like Usman could fight a heavyweight without any gloves or rules. Right now there's too many rules. It's kinda hurting the sport. Can't knee some one who's on the ground, can't grab someone's arm or hands without clinching your hands around the other fighters hands. I wouldn't mind a UFC night without ANY rules except rabbit punches. I'm ok with that 1 rule for a night like this.

I first started watching the UFC around the time when Don Frye competed in it. Back then there was no weight classes, no rounds, even pulling hair and holding onto their sleeves, grounded knees/kicks ect was allowed. They would also fight more than 1 guy in a night, there was none of this 1 fight a year B.S. I noticed a lot more people started to watch when Conor McGregor came into it.
