I've watched the fight. (Keep in mind that there were diffrent rules and judges scored the fights diffrently from current MMA), Bas was more busy on his back than Randleman was on top. Although Randleman wrestlef*cked him, he wasn't going for a finishing move.

Frank Shamrock: 23 wins, 6 by ko, 10 by submission. Bas Rutten: 28 wins, 12 by ko, 13 by submission. Also they fought 3 times and Bas won twice. Also Bas is older and started fighting under mma rules first. Take these facts however you would like.

Rutten was lucky to be the UFC HW Champ, he got the shit beaten out of him by Kevin Randleman and somehow won the decision. Rutten is arguably the greatest fighter in Pancrase history, but Frank dominated his opposition to become to become a UFC, Strikeforce, WEC and Pancrase champion. There is no other fighter in history to win a belt in all 4 of those organisations and he did it in a more convincing fashion than Rutten (except the Pancrase belt which he got after Rutten vacated it). Also, keep in mind that Frank did well enough to beat Bas in their 1st fight considering Bas fought at HW while Frank fought between LHW and MW.

It was only in their 3rd fight that Bas won via doctors stoppage when Frank still wanted to continue. Had they had their 4th fight in the UFC as was planned Frank probably would have won. Also, while he crushed cans like Delucia and Vernon White, lets not pretend he destroyed the Lions Den. Ken Shamrock dominated him both times they fought, providing a showcase of what Frank would have done if he were bigger.

If though Bas won more fights by both ko and submission while starting in the sport before Frank and beat Frank in 2 out of their 3 fights it is difficult to call Frank the "original mixed martial artist" or whatever. Also Kevin Randleman accepted that Bas won the fight. Bas was a very small heavyweight himself. He would be a middleweight today.

Kevin had guerrila RoiD arms compared to Bas, of course he'd keep him down easier. In that sense it wasn't even fair to begin with. It was just because of that one lucky punch that scratch him and made him bleed that made him look beat up

Plus this was all new to everyone back in the old days and UFC cage fighting is different from Pancreas ring fighting. If given a rematch I'm sure Bas would of won. He has an amazing ability to learn from his mistakes quick and adapt. Randleman got destroyed by skinny armed Rampage Jackson. Bas would of destroyed him as well in a rematch
