Since GSP was champion for so long we just take for granted that he is phenomenal, but for those not aware of the context at the time, this was a huge step up in competition for GSP and he was not really expected to win as Karo Parisyan was a very talented rising prospect back then. No easing into the UFC for GSP. They threw him right in there with Karo Parisyan. Different sport these days with all the tune-up fights to try to hype up an emerging talent. I think of Sean O'Malley, who might actually be awesome, but we still don't know, is the perfect counterexample. The level of competition O'Malley has faced 7 fights in the UFC is just bewilderingly low. GSP fought for the WW title in his 3rd UFC fight. Came up short then went on a tear and was undisputed champion by fight 9.

The funny thing is that this was only GSP's 6th pro fight and he was only 22 years old at the time of this fight. So good at such a young age, this level of competition was almost like being fed to the wolves for his 1st UFC fight. Fighters do not get this type of experienced fighter in their 1st fight anymore. Unless you were a champ in a different organization like a Michael Chandler, but he had 26 pro fights before he first fought in the UFC.

What a true natural. Every sport has a perfect athlete; GSP is MMAs.
@RMichaelHimself7 ай бұрын
Agreed. GSP was and always will, even 200 years from now, have a special place in MMA history. The original prototype of the well-rounded, super athlete who can outwrestle pure wrestlers, strike on the level of A tier kickboxers, and has BJJ sufficient to roll with lower level ADCC competitors.

GSP is actually a tentpole to aspire in an MMA career, it's not surprising at all that Khabib looks up to him. GSP was a once in a generation talent. There have been so many dominant champs but what makes GSP special is that he beat his opponents in their own game! kinda like how the Valentina is doing today.. They'll be remembered for the rest of time.
@FirstCitizenXIV2 жыл бұрын
@@1daboi100 Valentina's division is so weak, Strawweight is 10 times more deep, and GSPs era WW division is a hundred times more deep than even Strawweight. Only comparison between GSP and Valentina is their dominance but their resumes and skills are worlds apart.
@kommisar.2 жыл бұрын
@@FirstCitizenXIV Even when Valentina was fighting BW she was still dominating everyone except Nunes, and even those were close fights. She beat the current champion of that division handily as well. She may fight in a shallow division but her dominance based on her skill level is still unquestionable.
@juandupreez19852 жыл бұрын
@j jhon you're obviously not a martial artist or fighter bruv, how many said that and got Dominated like they meant nothing? Khabib Talks the talk and simultaneously chokes you out while he walks, no fighter in the ufc or any other decent promotion can be called cowards dude, they fight... Do you? And I don't mean no slap yo cousin in the back yard coz your older and he's smaller...

I remember watching this and being shocked. This was when Karo Parisyan was Karo Parisyan. In 1 fight, we all knew that St. Pierre was special. It's unfortunate that the UFC gave him a title shot so soon and it's unfortunate that he could have made it to round 2 if he didn't tap right when the round was over. But that loss created an animal and he was relentlessly driven every moment from that point on
