What a fucking unique speciman 2018 Derrick Lewis was. 3 straight plot armor type wins against 3 unobjectively more skilled fighters, then a performance in a title fight that had people wondering if he was paid to take a dive, but in reality he just didnt give a fuck. Let’s be honest: Derrick Lewis’s win over Volkov exposed a serious flaw in MMA judging and fight structure. Volkov outclassed Lewis for nearly the entire fight-cleaner striking, better control, higher output-yet all of that got erased by one lucky punch in the final seconds. In any other sport, domination for 14 minutes and 49 seconds would count for something. But in MMA, one mistake erases an entire performance. Yes, knockouts are exciting. But are we really okay with a system where a fighter can lose every second of a fight and still walk away with the win? If this were reversed-say Volkov landed that KO on Lewis after getting dominated-there would be outrage. But because Lewis is charismatic and meme-worthy, fans cheer and move on. The truth is, Volkov fought the smarter, cleaner fight and still lost. Maybe it’s time the UFC-and the fans-rethink how much we reward chaos over craft. A Hail Mary knockout shouldn't be treated as more valuable than nearly 15 minutes of consistent skill and control. It’s time we start having real conversations about scoring reform and the weight of a KO when it comes at the cost of total domination being ignored
