Well tbf Team Alpha Male (his gym) had like 5+ fights against Cruz, and basically channeled all their resources into figuring out how to beat Cruz. Cody and his team basically spend the last 2+ years leading up to this fight trying to perfect the match-up.

Cody trained to be the Anti-Cruz. Not that he was a bad fighter after this fight, but I feel that he put so much into negating Cruz’s style that it became difficult to break from that. Like a method actor who learns to speak a new accent, he can’t break it after filming the movie is over

@@michaelshields6326that plus I think the stars aligned for him this night. From his other fights I think he gets too eager to turn it into a brawl, and his conditioning usually is not this on point. I don’t know if he was motivated this fight or just had the perfect prep, but here he’s waiting and finding his openings plus his cardio is amazing. Sure his style is good matchup for Cruz but I think it’s much more than that. He was just simply way better that night than any of his other fights IMO.

Rewatching this, Dom's chin is highly underrated. It's either because he could take the sting off shots he knew he was gonna get hit by, or he just refused to be KO'd by the biggest 135 power puncher possibly ever.

This fight it closer than I remember it. Cruz has that weird style but he actually lands a lot of shots in this fight but he throws those weird punches.

This fight was A LOT closer than all casuals think. Don't listen to Joe Rogan, he's a company man and they wanted a new champ because Dom was unreliable due to a multitude of injuries. Cody won, but it was 48-47. If you read the comments you would think it was 50-43 or something.

Yeah its actually crazy to come back and see how close it was, cause admitably i thought it was a 50-45, definitely not the case. First 2 rounds are a complete 50-50 imo

This was just such a perfect night, the win for cody, and even Doms humility after the loss. It really shows Doms goat status how he still managed to win two rounds and it shows just how perfect cody was this night considering the wins dom picked up after this fight.

If you have great cardio and speed, this one way to weaponize it. It worked for a long time. Sadly, for guys who depend on speed and endurance, those fade quickly with age.

First time Cruz was "out Cruzed". That Alpha MAle team finally figured him out. It took a while! Because he is so quick. has KO power, and now learned to be evasive, I thought Garbrandt would be champ for a looooong time. Nope. Didn't happen. But for all his losses, he is still a threat, and certainly still entertaining.
