It's advancing so fast that each champion fighter gets much so much during his career. That's not the case with wrestling for example. After you are a champion the improvements are miniscule but not in MMA. Very interesting.

To survive a real fight in the street

It's not very useful in street fight but it certainly compulsory in MMA

@@chlorophyll6154 the Gracie family created the BJJ to use in street fights. Depending on the Submission used, it can kill a man easily.

@@douglasgomesbueno1526 nope, I certainly said no, street fight is uncontrollable elements at best, common occurrence is the opponent has weapon and usually involve more than 1 assailant ( most burglar case ) the only chance to survive by boxing or muay thai, the Idea was keep your distance and deliver strike fast enough before the assailant could take action that would stunt them and *RUN AWAY* , 95% knife counter attack are fatal even how many black belt you have, BJJ in street fight is useless because it do not kept distance and leaving your back expose which make other assailant could easily stab you

I was a young kid underestimating what jujitsu really was and laughing at the style.

First ufc I saw was ufc4. After that I went back and watched 1-3. Those were wild back then

There was no MMA (mixed martial arts). UFC cause the mix that we know today.

@@Lucille69caddy most fights aren't between naked greased up wrestlers though. So I'd say BJJ is still the king of fighting, just maybe not the *sport* of fighting.

@@tradtke101 Every style has its place, I guess. On the street though, going into the guard right away might not be the thing to do. A big guy like myself (6’2 1/2”, 245 lbs) would pick the dude up by his clothes, belt, whatever (no naked greased up wrestling here, lol) and slam his ass on the concrete. FIGHT OVER. In a ring it’s set up so dudes don’t get hurt. The ring is sprung and padded. It is a sport after all. JJ is great at subduing a drunken bastard (I’ve had to do it to my brother and some out of hand friends) without hurting him. Multiple dudes JJ is absolutely useless. At least with striking arts you can strike and flee if you have to. That’s happened to me a few times. Fight just enough to get the hell outta there. Live to fight another day. One dude taking on five guys is movie fodder.

@@Lucille69caddy those are both good points. You definitely need some kind of wrestling/judo for grappling while standing. And agreed that multiple opponents you need aggressive striking and luck. It never hurts to have more. But IMO most realistic self defense scenarios are basically the defender trying to survive an attack from one attacker until help arrives. For that BJJ is great, especially for women to defend themselves from assault which is the #1 self defense scenario. It's definitely different priorities for someone your size. (I was never quite that big, but not too far off.) Then it's great to have more skills, and like you said, BJJ becomes less powerful the more the other person has training. (But most people don't.) There's also the fact that BJJ is weak to dirty stuff like head butts, biting, gouging, pulling fingers. But still, I feel confident that grappling is the way to go if I am in a typical 1v1 fight situation (no weapons, not an attempted murder) because I can take striking out of the equation. Which takes luck out of the equation.

The Gi has advantages since you can hold on to it to help with chokes and other positions.

No weight classes. It's gonna be riot. I believe only LHW and HW would take the chance. MW and welter can only hope not to face the bigger opponent like Ngannou or Jon Jones

I agree on almost everything you say. If you take a look, the most interesting champions in modern UFC are still specialists. The difference is that they are specialists in more than one area. Anderson Silva: Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do, BJJ Jon Jones: Wrestling, Muay Thai. Khabib: sambô, boxing Connor Mcgregor: boxing, karatê. Adesanya and Alex Poatan: Kickboxers. Charles Oliveira: BJJ and Muay Thay. And so on and so far. The guys that "train mma" and are not specialists in some martial arts are quite boring and average all around.

I know what you mean and I do agree but the simple reality is some styles are just too superior. So if there’s a match up of styles people need to have certain techniques from certain disciplines.

You’re right about this, but there are still some people that have a special skill in a particular area and lean towards that area. Edson Barboza. Jon Jones. Amanda nunes. To name a few. You’re right though. Their skills are much closer to each other than it used to be.

For a layman, those stylistic shifts aren't nearly as obvious as back in the day, where most fighters had small comfort zones and were mostly clueless once taken outside of those. This is inevitable as the sport has evolved, but it requires more knowledge from the viewer to maintain the same appeal.

I know this comment is a year old but incase you never got your answer. Not really, all fighters in the mma know some form of grappling now to prevent pure grappling strategies. In the UFC you need both striking and grappling techniques to stand a chance. There are however fighters who focus on grappling more than striking such as Islam makachev, Charles oliveria or someone like Paddy Pimblett if you want some mainstream current fighters. but you'll notice they will strike alot too and they'll strike alot of the ground instead of just going for submission.

Not anymore. Modern training has advanced BJJ defence so well that it's second nature to most MMA fighters, that they're back to focusing on offence such as strikes and wrestling. That's why right now the top contenders and champions in UFC at least, are wrestlers or strikers (adesanya, usman, ngannou, Poirier holloway etc) but there are still a few with exceptional bjj
